The Airbus A320 is a series of narrow-body airliners developed and manufactured by Airbus. It was the first civil airliner with a digital fly-by-wire control system (i.e. only electrical signals are transmitted from the cockpit to the servomotors).
After the success of the Airbus A300, Airbus began developing a replacement for the then most popular airliner in the world - the Boeing 727. The new Airbus was to have the same capacity, but lower operating costs and was to be available in several versions for different numbers of passengers. The digital technologies used in the A320 were a symbol of a two-generation technological leap compared to the all-analog Boeing 727 and a generational leap compared to the Boeing 737 series -300/400/500. The A320 was intended to be a worldwide replacement for the 727 and the oldest variants of the 737.
