The Airbus A320 is a civil short- and medium-haul airliner manufactured by Airbus. It was the first civilian airliner with a fly-by-wire digital control system.
After the success of the Airbus A300, Airbus began to develop a replacement for the then most popular airliner in the world - the Boeing 727. The new Airbus was to have the same capacity but lower operating costs and was to be available in several versions for different numbers of passengers. The digital technologies used in the A320 were a symbol of a two-generation technological leap compared to the all-analog Boeing 727 and a generational leap compared to the Boeing 737 series -300/400/500. The A320 was intended to be a global replacement for the 727 and the oldest 737 variants.

After increases in oil prices in the 1970s, Airbus needed to minimize fuel costs for the A320. To achieve this, he used a number of state-of-the-art technologies in his new type, e.g. a fly-by-wire flight control system, extensive use of composite materials, control of the aircraft's center of gravity using fuel, a glass cockpit and a two-person crew. Thanks to these improvements, the A320 achieved 50% lower fuel consumption than the Boeing 727.
The A320 has a computerized on-board maintenance system. The avionics systems are designed to be easily upgraded to a newer version. With the exception of the very first A320s, most machines can be upgraded to the latest avionics standard and still be modern after twenty years in service.
