Following the ultimatum given to Iraq by the UN Security Council to withdraw from occupied Kuwait on January 15, 1991, seven B-52 bombers with a crew of 57 took off from Barksdale Air Force Base in the US state of Louisiana in the early hours of the morning. the morning of January 16 was the longest combat mission in Air Force history. The seven Stratofortresses took four aerial refuelings to complete the 14,000-mile, more than 22,000-kilometer, then-secret mission. After no less than 35 hours in the air, the exhausted crews of the 596th Bombardment Squadron were back on American soil. The "Secret Squirrel" mission was a prelude to the large-scale Operation "Desert Storm" to liberate Kuwait.
