After the success of the Canadair Challenger business jet, Canadair realized that it would be easy to convert it into a small airliner. Unlike most business jets, the Challenger was wide enough to have two seats on either side of the aisle. By stretching the fuselage 19 feet fore and aft of the wing, Canadair was able to develop the Challenger into the Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) by 1987. but the designation remained the same.
