SNCASE merged into the larger Sud Aviation conglomerate before the aircraft entered revenue service on 26 April 1959, with the Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS); 282 were built until production ceased in 1972. It was ordered by airlines on all continents and operated until its retirement in 2005.
