The Convair 880 is an American narrow-body jet airliner manufactured by Convair. It was designed as a competitor to the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 aircraft. Although the plane was faster, it was also smaller, which was one of the reasons for lower demand. At the time it was first introduced, at a speed of 990 km/h, it was considered in some circles to be the fastest jet airliner in the world. Only 65 Convair 880s were built during its entire production run from 1959 to 1962, and it was considered a failure by parent company General Dynamics.
