The Douglas SBD Dauntless is an American naval reconnaissance aircraft and dive bomber of World War II, produced by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 to 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the primary reconnaissance/dive bomber of the United States Navy from mid-1940 to mid-1944. The SBD was also flown by the United States Marine Corps, both from land-based air bases and from aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bomber that delivered deadly strikes against Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. The type earned the nickname "Slow But Deadly" (after the initials SBD) during this period.
