The US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, popularly known as the Blue Angels, first performed in 1946 and is currently the oldest formal flying aerobatic team. For the 1957 show season, the Blue Angels traded in the F9F-8 Cougar for the more powerful, supersonic Grumman F11F-1 Tiger. Having recently increased their flight demonstration to six aircraft, the team added the now famous six-plane delta formation to their routine in 1958. They continued to fly the Tiger for a twelve year period before transitioning to the F-4J Phantom II in 1969.
