The 553 made its Formula 2 debut at the Monza GP in 1953, but at the beginning of 1954 it became a real Formula 1 with the adoption of a 2500cc 4-cylinder in-line engine. The side panels housing the petrol tanks gave the car the nickname "shark". During 1954 the 553 revealed several reliability problems but managed to win the last GP of the season in Pedralbes (Spain) with Mike Hawthorn. The poor performance of the 553 was partially offset by the 625 (an evolution of the 500 F2), also equipped with a 4-cylinder engine with the mandatory 2500cc displacement.
