The second generation of the square shape appeared in January 1975. The first production models rolled off the production line on December 2, 1974.
Compared to the first generation Escort (which was developed at Ford of Britain), the second generation was jointly developed with the United Kingdom and Ford of Germany. The engines remained the same as in the first generation except for the 1.8-liter four-cylinder in the RS1800 version. The RS2000 version was recognizable mainly by the front mask with four circular headlights.
