Back in the 1970s, Boeing began developing a successor to its mid-range bestseller, the three-engine 727. The result was the twin-engine 757, which promised better performance and higher efficiency. Between 1981 and 2004, at least 1,050 of these aircraft were to leave Boeing's factories. This was followed by a variant stretched by seven meters, especially for medium-haul routes with high demand, such as those served by the German holiday airline Condor. The result was the 757-300, which has an overall length of 54.4 meters and is approved for up to 295 passengers in one class. The first customer, Condor, took delivery of 15 of these aircraft since 1999 and was the largest operator of this variant alongside Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines. In addition to its many 757-200s, Icelandair currently operates two 757-300s with seating for 223 passengers, one of which, TF-ISX, has been flying in Iceland's national colors since 2018 to celebrate 100 years of independence.
