The Land Rover Series I, II and III or simply Land-Rover (commonly referred to as the Land Rover series to distinguish them from later models) are British compact off-road vehicles manufactured by the Rover Company from 1948 and later by British Leyland. Inspired by the World War II Jeep, it was the first mass-produced four-wheel-drive civilian car with doors and an available hardtop. Unlike conventional car and truck chassis, it used a more robust fully welded frame. In addition, due to the post-war shortage of steel and the surplus of aluminum, Land Rovers received stainless aluminum alloy bodies, favoring their longevity. In 1992, Land Rover claimed that 70% of all vehicles they produced were still in use.
