With the 190 model (W201 series), Mercedes took the first step towards more economical segments. At its presentation held in December 1982, there was no shortage of criticism of the car, which appeared to be too "poor". In fact, the 190 has all the characteristics of a Mercedes, above all the build quality. Originally available as the 190 (90 hp) and 190E (122 hp), the W201 subsequently received additional engines, including a diesel (190D 2.5 in 1985, 2.5 Turbo Diesel in 1986). In 1988, restyling was introduced and in February 1993, the car was discontinued. The sporty versions of the W201 are remarkable and deserve a separate feature.
