Four of the 24 copies of the MiG-29 that were delivered to the GDR in 1988 were two-seat MiG-29UB versions. In contrast to the one-seaters, three of the four coaches wore this gray camouflage scheme. After reunification, the "179 black" was given a new identification and continued to serve in the Federal Air Force until 2004 as part of the newly-formed fighter squadron 73.
