Na začiatku 60tých rokov 20. storočia započal por. Nguyen Hong My výcvik na MiG-21 Severovietnamského letectva v tedajšom Sovietskom zväze a po dokončení mu jeho pilotné krídla predal Ho Chi Minh. Dodnes má uznaný jeden zostrel amerického lietadla. Hong My bol 16. Apríla 1972 zostrelený stihačkou F-4 Phantom Amerického letectva s číslom 66-7550 pilotovanou maj. Danem Cherrym. Por. Hong My si pri zostrelení zlomil obe ruky a poranil chrbticu, ale za 2 roky sa zotavil a znovu lietal. Por. Nguyen Hong My a brig. gen. v.v. Dan Cherry sú od tejto doby priateľmi.
The Mig-21 was originally built by the Mikoyan and Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union with a NATO nickname Fishbed. No other jet has had as many planes produced as the Mig-21. Depending on the reference source 8,000 - 13,000 planes of all versions were made in the Soviet Union, under license to allied countries and China without license. A small, fast, agile, dependable and most importantly simple making it easy to turn out great numbers of the plane.
