In the 1950s, the Škoda car company (acting under the trade name Automobilové Závody Národní Podnik) was given the task of "putting the nation on wheels". This meant, among other things, increasing the production of cars and reducing their production costs. In 1955, the then Ministry of General Engineering established the prerequisites for a new car. It was supposed to be at least a four-seater car with a curb weight of approximately 700 kg and a fuel consumption of 6 to 7 liters / 100 km. In principle, the design department of the car company had the opportunity to minimize the dimensions of the vehicle, or, in the case of standard dimensions, to make the car as light as possible. The automaker chose the second solution.
