The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was an American supersonic long-range strategic reconnaissance aircraft. It was developed as a continuation of the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft project in the 1960s by Lockheed and its Skunk Works division under the leadership of "Kelly" Johnson. During reconnaissance missions, the machine operated at high altitudes and at high speeds, thus it was able to avoid enemy anti-aircraft defenses.
