Air Defender 23 was the largest air force deployment exercise in NATO history. Up to 10,000 soldiers from 25 countries practiced the ability to react jointly in a crisis situation. Germany took the leading role and was a logistics hub. It was attended by 250 transport, observation and combat aircraft deployed at various locations in Germany. The US National Guard alone deployed 100 aircraft to Europe for this maneuver. For the first time, the German Air Force has specially decorated an Airbus A400M from its Air Transport Wing 62 based in Wunstorf, highlighting the importance of close cooperation and coordination between NATO partners.
