The BAe 146 is a medium-sized commercial aircraft manufactured in the United Kingdom by British Aerospace (later part of BAE Systems). Production ran from 1983 to 2002. Production of an improved version known as the Avro RJ began in 1992. The next version, the Avro RJX, which was announced in 1997, featured new engines, but by the end of production (end of 2001), only two prototypes and one serial machine. With 387 aircraft produced, the Avro RJ / BAe 146 program became Britain's most successful civil jet program.
The BAe 146 / Avro RJ is a high-wing aircraft with T-shaped tail surfaces. It has four twin-jet engines suspended on pylons under the wings and three-wheeled retractable landing gear. The aircraft has a very quiet operation and was marketed under the name Whisperjet. It is widely used mainly in small city airports. Its primary role is in regional and short-haul flights. The BAe 146 / Avro RJ is used by European airlines such as Brussels Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines and Lufthansa.
