A high-quality metal model of the civil aircraft Douglas DC-3 Sabena.
The origins of the Belgian "Société anonyme belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation aérienne" (French for "Belgian Corporation for the Exploitation of Air Navigation") - or simply SABENA - date back to 1923, operating flights to neighboring countries in Europe, but also pioneering flights to its colony, especially to long-haul Africa. Shortly before Sabena ceased all European operations due to the outbreak of World War II, the airline received its first two revolutionary Douglas DC-3 transport aircraft. After World War II finally ended, Sabena resumed business and flew a fleet of C-47 transports, thousands of which were now surplus. One of these early demilitarized C-47-DC-3s was OO-AWN. Built for the US Army Air Force in 1943 and also operated briefly by the Dutch Air Force in the East Indies, now Indonesia, it was handed over to Sabena in 1950, where it remained part of the fleet until its retirement in 1969.
