High-quality metal model of the military aircraft F-111A "Gunboat Killer" in detailed design according to the real model. The package includes a stand, antenna and chassis.
The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark is a decommissioned medium-range supersonic multi-role combat aircraft. Production models of the F-111 had roles that included attack (eg, interdiction), strategic bombing (including nuclear weapons capabilities), reconnaissance, and electronic warfare. The name Aardvark was derived from the aircraft's perceived resemblance to an animal: a long nose and low-level terrain tracking capabilities. The word "aardvark" originated in Afrikaans as an abbreviation for "earth pig" and was the source of the F-111's nickname "Pig" during its Australian service.
Developed in the 1960s by General Dynamics under Robert McNamara's TFX program, the F-111 pioneered variable-sweep, turbocharged afterburner and automated terrain-following radar for low-level, high-speed flight. Its design influenced later variable-wing aircraft, and some of its advanced features became commonplace. The F-111 suffered from engine-related problems during its initial development. The US Navy variant of the fighter, the F-111B, was canceled before production; it was designed for carrier-based missions including long-range interception. Later, several specialized models were also developed, such as the FB-111A strategic bomber and the EF-111 electronic warfare aircraft.
