In the early 1970s, the Imperial Iranian Air Force was looking for an advanced fighter, specifically a fighter capable of intercepting Soviet MiG-25 reconnaissance flights. In January 1974, Iran placed an order for 30 F14s - a few months later the number ordered increased to 80 F14s. The first F14 arrived in January 1976, the following year another 12 F14s were delivered. Meanwhile, the first groups of Iranian crews were being trained in the US. To date, Iran has 41 F14s in service.
