It was produced from 1952 (prototype) to 1964 at the VEB motor vehicle factory "Ernst Grube" in Werdau. The factory was part of the IFA and arose from the Schumann plants in Werdau, which were closed in 1945. Development of the truck began during World War II at Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik AG (Vomag). As the Soviet occupying power had Vomag completely dismantled and dismantled shortly after the end of the war, development continued at Auto Union and Horch.
